Beautiful women and numbers may well have something in common both are sexy, and both are the foundation of the VENUS in Berlin. The numbers in the eleven-year history of the VENUS trade fair in Berlin are a lot like the ladies in our industry: they represent business, power and sex appeal.
Usually talking about numbers is quite boring. But as a specialist trade fair, in times like these and with this kind of general mood on the market, it can be a good idea to put some hard facts on the table and maybe even bring a smile to peoples faces at the same time. The first VENUS was held in 1997 for the industry and retailers, and over the following years continued to develop in every area. If you look at the development in the exhibitors, it is immediately obvious that the international presence has increased ten-fold, and they now make up some 55% of the total number of exhibitors. Whereas in the early days there were 18 country flags to be seen, we are now proud to say that this number has increased 2.5-fold to 35 countries. One of the reasons for this increase is undoubtedly that more and more industries are turning to the VENUS in Berlin for additional sales opportunities.
The resulting product variety and innovations have increased almost proportionally to the number of specialist buyers to about 6500. And if you now look more closely at the two diagrams [Download (pdf)], you will notice another extremely pleasing development. The ratio between exhibitors and specialist buyers has consistently grown at an extremely healthy economic rate over the years. This is due in no small part to the increasing quality of specialist buyers and their estimated total turnover at the trade fair of 100 million euros. And everyone, exhibitors and buyers alike, is responsible for ensuring indeed, even obliged to ensure that this development is maintained. Another extremely interesting development is in the number of participating countries: growth of 500% in the last 10 years to 60 countries has made the VENUS the worlds most successful specialist trade fair.
Clear confirmation that the VENUS trade fair is indeed a specialist event is instantly apparent when you look at the development in consumer visitors. The figures over the years indicate quite clearly that the major part of the organisers marketing power is aimed at specialist retailers rather than attracting consumers. Of course, the buying power of the willing consumer at the trade fair is not to be underestimated and indeed is the target group for some exhibitors. There has also been a positive development in the number of those exhibitors. In the first years, about 95% of visitors who made their way to the event came from the greater area of Berlin. Thanks to the extensive reporting every year, more and more interested parties have heard about the VENUS trade fair, and as the result in recent years some 80% of visitors have travelled to Berlin from a radius of approx. 150 km. The remaining 20% have come from the remainder of the Federal Republic and neighbouring countries. With an average age of 38, the proportion between men and women among the approx. 25,000 consumers is in the region of 70:30.
And last but by no means least, the media has also played an extremely important role in the growth of the event. Not just of the event, but in fact of the whole industry. Last year, some 120 million media contacts (excluding the Internet) reported on the VENUS more than ever before. A clear indication that: sex still sells.
Some people may now be asking themselves why the organisers of the VENUS are so optimistic with regard to the expected numbers of exhibitors and visitors: the current registration situation with some 35% more exhibitors and 20% more exhibition area than last year can only encourage optimism.

Launch of a company with international ambitions.
Bremen, 6 July 2006. Bremen-based WOLWIN GmbH & Co. KG was founded in March 2007 by partners Andreas Windler and Florian Wolters. The company is involved in the development, production and marketing of consumer goods for various market segments, including adult toys that are made in Germany.
Motivation and development
WOLWIN GmbH & Co. KG is the result of a chance meeting between the founders in 2005. Subsequent intensive analyses of the market for erotica and the alignment of the competition soon led to the idea of developing a brand for high quality, sensually aesthetic adult toys. Because of the diversity of the erotica market itself often the target of discrimination and prejudice a high level of information had to be provided for potential investors and banks.
The team
Andreas Windler, a graduate in economics, was born in Bremen in 1975; he studied economic sciences at the University of Bremen and then embarked on his professional life with Kraft Foods. He ended this in 2007 as Senior Brand Manager for the coffee brands Jakobs, Onko and Kaffee Hag. Andreas Windler is also the proud father of four children, and a former regional president of the Jungen Union Bremen.
Florian Wolters, a graduate in business administration, was born Essen Bremen in 1970 and studied at the Free University of Berlin, majoring in finance and IT. He left his advertising agency, which focused on the areas of CI, print and packaging and which as the owner he had run successfully with a partner, to set up the WOLWIN company. As well as being a tremendous fan of the "Zwölfkampf", twelve competitive events from gymnastics, track and field, he is also the doting father of a son.
Since they started up the company, the two have led a team of people with years of experience in the most diverse industries and products. Supported by an international network of designers and engineers, the teams responsibilities include marketing, market research, communication, product development, production and sales.
